A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
