Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
