New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
